The Revived Global Movement to Improve Rheumatic Heart Disease Care

Chris Longenecker is an associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the Project Director of RHD Action Uganda which is funded by Medtronic Global Health Foundation and aims to leverage existing HIV/AIDS infrastructure to develop a national rheumatic heart disease (RHD) treatment program in Uganda. Since 2013, this program—currently operating in Kampala, Lubowa, Mbarara, Gulu, and Lira—has supported the expansion of the Uganda National Rheumatic Heart Disease Registry, physician and health worker training, community education, and epidemiologic research in rheumatic heart disease.
