DESCRIPTION:Interleukin 6 regulation of T cell metabolism and function\nYazan Alwarawrah\, PhD\nAssistant Professor\, Pediatric Endocrinology\n3116 Mary Ellen Jones \nLunch Provided\nor\nJOIN THE ZOOM\nhttps://zoom.us/j/98566446544?pwd=ajU0aFhvbGdZRlROZXN0Z1liMXlzZz09\nPlease mute your microphone. \n  \nDr. Yazan Alwarawrah is a Research Assistant Professor who is interested in targeting metabolism for the treatment of disease. Currently\, he is studying T cell metabolism in the context of obesity-associated protective immunity dysfunction where he uses the diet induced obesity mouse model to study the effect of obesity on T cell metabolism and function in different tissues using metabolic and flow cytometric approaches. He is specifically interested in the role of T cell metabolic dysfunction in the impairment of protective immunity against influenza. He also works on studying Immunity Related GTPase I (Irgm1) regulation of T cell metabolism and function and its role in protective immunity and autoimmunity\, and he works on the metabolic engineering of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells to enhance their persistence in the tumor microenvironment. He has a diverse scientific background ranging from molecular biology and bioinformatics to pharmacology and immunology. He seeks challenging questions in cellular metabolism and immunology that can lead to finding treatments for obesity associated pathologies\, cancer\, and autoimmune diseases. \n\nThe School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. DESCRIPTION:Exploring shared decision-making between Latina mothers and pediatric mental health providers\nDeshira Wallace\, PhD\, MSPH\nAssistant Professor\nUNC Department of Health Behavior\nCarolina Population Center – Faculty Fellow\n3116 Mary Ellen Jones \nLunch Provided\nor\nZoom by Request\n\nDeshira Wallace\, PhD\, MSPH (she/her) is an assistant professor at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Health Behavior and is a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center. Dr. Wallace’s work is focused on the role of stressors\, psychosocial\, environmental\, and structural\, on chronic conditions among minoritized populations. She also works at the intersection of mental and emotional health and physical health. Her work is focused on Latino populations in the US and rural communities in the Dominican Republic\, in which she uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the role of stress on chronic conditions. Recent work includes: (1) integrating emotional and mental health into diabetes care in rural Dominican Republic; (2) examining the role of heat stress on the health of farmworkers in eastern North Carolina (3) developing measures of psychosocial distress to support patient-provider interactions. Dr. Wallace earned her PhD in Health Behavior from UNC-Chapel Hill and a BA in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Duke University. \n\nThe School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.\nThe School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). SUMMARY:Children's Research Institute Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Engineering intrinsic AAV proteins for safer gene therapies\nSara Powell\, PhD\nAssistant Professor of Pediatrics\nUNC Pediatric Genetics & Metabolism &\nThe Center for Molecular Medicine\n3116 Mary Ellen Jones \nLunch Provided\nor\nZoom Details Upon Request\nAdeno-associated virus (AAV) has become the vector of choice for gene therapy treatments. AAV’s dominance is due in part to decades of research on its biology here at The UNC-CH Gene Therapy Center. Now that the therapeutic potential of gene therapy and AAV gene therapy has been realized\, a greater understanding of the virus is required to generate safer\, more efficacious treatments. Dr. Powell’s lab studies intrinsic AAV proteins and their potential roles in AAV biology that can be applied to AAV gene therapies in the Central Nervous System (CNS). One such AAV protein is VP1 which is a subunit of the capsid\, but they focus on the internalized unstructured region that is unavailable to cellular receptor binding. This region of VP1 can be changed to alter transgene expression in vivo\, and Dr. Powell’s team is working to harness this and learn about its mechanism. Another AAV intrinsic protein is MAAP (membrane-associated accessory protein) which is encoded in the same gene as VP1 but from an alternate reading frame. While MAAP was first described to function during AAV vector production\, they found that it can mediate AAV transgene expression in vivo. Therefore\, her lab works to understand MAAP biology in vivo and how to apply what they learn to develop AAV gene therapies for the CNS. Dr. Powell’s lab has also collaborated with other labs to generate AAV novel vectors for epilepsy\, ALS\, and Alzheimer’s by targeting oligodendrocytes\, pericytes\, and neurons using their findings from AAV basic biology and capsid libraries. \nOpen to All:\nYou don’t need to be a CRI member to present or participate.
