Dr. Muenzer\u2019s career has included the creation of a mouse model &#8211; an invaluable research tool &#8211; for MPS II and the publication of more than 50 articles relating to the MPS disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center builds upon that existing work in several important ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expansion of the UNC MPS basic science and translational research efforts through recruitment of new faculty members with support for their early years, prioritize junior faculty and encouraging MPS related research careers.<\/li>\n<li>Development of funding for PhD students researching MPS, ensuring that our best and brightest in the next generation of researchers are supported;<\/li>\n<li>Enhancement of educational opportunities across the UNC School of Medicine, creating learning opportunities for UNC residents and fellows, medical students, and genetic counseling students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"11bx9zd\" data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"458\">Research Posters &amp; Publications<\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ho4hdk\" data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"582\">Early Identification of MPS I Through Newborn Screening: Clinical Insights from Siblings with the W402X\/L238Q Genotype<\/h3>\n<p>WORLD Symposium 2026<\/p>\n<p><strong data-start=\"535\" data-end=\"628\">MPS I is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of the \u03b1-L-iduronidase enzyme.<\/strong> This poster describes a sibling pair identified through newborn screening, enabling early diagnosis and treatment in the newborn and leading to diagnosis of an older sibling with previously unrecognized disease.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;font-size: 14px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/muenzer-mps-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1312\/2026\/03\/Jalazo_WORLD_poster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download Poster (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:20px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1qdwjum\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1022\">Outcomes of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Individuals with MPS II (Hunter Syndrome)<\/h3>\n<p>WORLD Symposium 2026<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1qdwjum\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1022\"><strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1104\">MPS II (Hunter syndrome) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of iduronate-2-sulfatase.<\/strong> This study evaluates outcomes of individuals who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), including complications, adaptive behavior outcomes, and caregiver perspectives.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/muenzer-mps-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1312\/2026\/03\/PPX-POSTER_Outcomes-of-HSCT-in-MPS-II_WORLDS2026_LAW.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download Poster (PDF) <\/a><\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1qdwjum\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1022\"><hr  style=\"margin:20px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1v3ok33\" data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1825\">Delphi Survey for Updated MPS II Clinical Guidelines<\/h3>\n<p>WORLD Symposium 2026<\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1v3ok33\" data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1825\"><strong data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1512\">MPS II is a rare genetic disorder with evolving treatment approaches and limited global expertise.<\/strong> A Delphi survey of international clinicians was conducted to gather consensus on clinical management practices to help inform updated treatment guidelines.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/muenzer-mps-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1312\/2026\/03\/Stephens-MPS-II-Delphi-Survey-Poster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download Poster (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-section-id=\"1v3ok33\" data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1825\"><hr  style=\"margin:20px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/globalgenes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Step_by_Step_Guide_to_Participating_in_a_Clinical_Trial__GG_PRA.pdf\">toolkit from Global Genes<\/a> with a step-by-step guide to walk families through the process of joining and participating in a clinical trial from start to finish. One of the key aims of this guide is to help families advocate for themselves and their loved ones throughout the process.
