Kristin joined the Department of Pediatrics at UNC in 2015 where she provides genetic counseling services for patients and their families impacted by rare genetic disorders.\u00a0 Given her particular interest in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and other lysosomal storage diseases, she now serves as the primary genetic counselor at the Dr. Joseph Muenzer MPS Research & Treatment Center.<\/p>\n
Kristin is committed to ensuring that genetic counseling services are accessible to all individuals and families impacted by MPS and related disorders. Her commitment extends to patients at every stage of their journey with MPS, from those newly diagnosed to those managing long-term care.\u00a0 Kristin also contributes to newborn screening programs and public health practices aimed at early diagnosis.\u00a0 She advocates for a unique balance of the benefits of early detection with a nuanced understanding of its impact on families, advocating for supportive resources alongside screening efforts.\u00a0 Kristin’s research interests are also closely tied to her clinical work and public health initiatives as she aims to integrate the family perspective into care protocols and research development, ensuring that clinical trials and treatment approaches align with the real-world experiences of those living with MPS.<\/p>\n
Outside of work, Kristin enjoys spending time by the water, whether at the lake or beach. Despite her love for working at UNC, she remains a devoted NC State Wolfpack fan – an interesting twist given her current position at a rival school.\u00a0 Attending NC State football games has been a family tradition since she was young, started by her father and now carried on by her and her husband.<\/p>\n
