Dr. Francisco Sylvester

Dr. Sylvester joined GI as Division Chief on October 31.

SylvesterFrancisco Sylvester, MD, joined the UNC Department of Pediatrics on October 31 as the new Division Chief for Pediatric Gastroenterology.

Dr. Sylvester joins us from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and the University of Connecticut. Prior to his appointment at Connecticut, Dr. Sylvester completed medical school in his native Peru where upon graduation, he performed his civil service in general medicine at San Juan de Dios community health center and then worked at the Instituto de Investigacion Nutricional, taking care of severely malnourished children.

He came to the United States in 1987 to train in pediatrics at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, where he completed residency and served as chief resident. Dr. Sylvester then completed his pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Dr. Sylvester has active research interests in bone health in growing children with chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract and mucosal immunology of inflammatory bowel diseases. His previous grant sponsors at Connecticut include the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, the Donaghue Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Sylvester has served as the director of CCFA’s PROKIIDS since 2013 and he is in his second term as a member of the CCFA Board of Trustees.
