About the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology

Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology at UNC! We are nationally recognized as one of the country’s best, ranked number 16 by U.S. News & World Report on its 2019-2020 “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” list. That is the highest ranking of any pediatric program in the entire state!

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology provides state of the art diagnosis and treatment of lung disease in children, as well as cutting edge research into many aspects of pulmonary disease. We treat patients from newborn to young adult, and care for a variety of common and uncommon problems including asthma, lung disease of prematurity, and cystic fibrosis. Our nurses and physicians manage complex pulmonary disease in the context of a multidisciplinary team including experts in nutrition, physical therapy, speech pathology, and social work.

Our team members provide care to children all across North Carolina as well as neighboring states and across the globe. Our division is a major referral center for children with many pulmonary diseases including cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. We also have a large and active program in the state for flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, a procedure that allows our physicians to directly visualize the pediatric airway. We work closely with the divisions of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Surgery, and others to provide a comprehensive pulmonary management program. Since many health care professionals are involved in treating children, you may want to refer to our Glossary of Pediatric Clinicians to better understand their roles.

Outpatient consultations are provided in clinics held at North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill, at the Children’s Specialty Clinic in Raleigh and in our AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) clinic in Wilmington, NC. Our inpatients are cared for at N.C. Children’s Hospital, a facility that opened in 2002. Our goal is to continue our state-of-the-art treatment of patients while advancing our knowledge of pulmonary disease through basic and clinical research. We strive to offer the best medical care and find long term solutions for our patients and their families.

Pulmonary Procedures

The division of Pediatric Pulmonology provides expertise in flexible bronchoscopy. This procedure allows physicians to visualize the vocal cords and airways. Flexible bronchoscopy is performed in the Pediatric Endoscopy/ Bronchoscopy Center at North Carolina Children’s Hospital, as well as in the operating rooms, imaging suites, and intensive care units.

The division also performs infant and preschool lung function testing in a state of the art facility located in N.C. Children’s Hospital as well as at the N.C. Children’s Specialty Clinic, and the NC State Park Scholars Children’s Specialty Clinic located on the Rex Healthcare campus in Raleigh. This procedure allows our physicians to obtain assessments of lung function in the youngest patients who are unable to perform traditional lung function tests.
