Dr. Brenner\u2019s award will support her work to improve pain management for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with a particular focus on women with Crohn\u2019s disease who experience painful menstrual cramps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advancing Evidence-Based Pain Management in IBD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pain is a common and impactful symptom for people with IBD, yet treatment options are often limited. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently avoided in Crohn\u2019s disease due to concerns about triggering disease flares\u2014concerns that are largely based on weak evidence. Dr. Brenner\u2019s K23-funded research seeks to re-evaluate the safety and effectiveness of NSAIDs in this population.<\/div>\n<\/div>\nAs part of this work, Dr. Brenner will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop <strong>patient-reported outcome measures<\/strong> tailored to women with Crohn\u2019s disease and menstrual cramps, capturing symptom severity while accounting for overlap with Crohn\u2019s disease symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Lead a <strong>single-center pilot randomized controlled trial<\/strong>\u2014the Acetaminophen Versus Ibuprofen for Discomfort in Crohn\u2019s Disease (AVID-CD) trial\u2014to inform the design of a future multi-center study comparing ibuprofen and acetaminophen for menstrual pain in women with Crohn\u2019s disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This research aims to fill a critical gap identified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crohn\u2019s &amp; Colitis Foundation<\/a> and lay the groundwork for more effective, evidence-based pain management strategies in IBD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Career Development and Mentorship<\/strong><br \/>\nIn addition to supporting her research, the K23 award will provide Dr. Brenner with advanced training in the development and validation of patient-reported outcome measures and in the design and conduct of randomized controlled trials.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brenner is supported by a multidisciplinary mentorship team that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pediatrics\/people\/michael-kappelman-md-mph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Michael Kappelman<\/a>, a world-renowned health services researcher at UNC, and <a href=\"https:\/\/populationhealth.duke.edu\/profile\/bryce-b-reeve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Bryce Reeve<\/a>, an internationally-recognized patient-reported outcome measures expert and Director of the Center for Health Measurement at the Duke Population Health Sciences Center.
