National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kolkata, West Bengal

NIBMG is an autonomous institute under the aegis of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, located in Kalyani, West Bengal, India (near Kolkata). It is the first institution in India explicitly devoted to research, training, translation & service and capacity-building in Biomedical Genomics. The research focus of the institute is to understand the molecular basis of disease using genomics-driven approaches. Such knowledge can be translated for enhanced prediction, prevention and cure and also provides insight into mechanism of disease development and progression. NIBMG laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as high-throughput sequencing platforms that are made available to other publicly-funded institutes across India as a core genomics facility.

Dr. Samsiddhi Bhattacharjee is an Associate Professor at NIBMG and also Intermediate Fellow of DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance. His primary interests are in the areas of statistical genomics and etiology of complex diseases. His group is involved in developing statistical methodology and software for ‘integrative statistical modelling’ of genomic data from multiple sources (such as GWAS, transcriptomics, epigenomics and eQTL studies) and biological knowledge stored in databases (e.g. pathways and ontologies) in order to elucidate genetic factors underlying complex diseases and downstream molecular changes driving pathogenesis. He is also interested in understanding the role of gene-environment interactions in complex diseases that has potential clinical implications for prevention and therapeutic strategies.
