Department of Psychiatry, at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh was established in 1963. It has been a WHO collaborating center for research and training in mental health. Faculty members of the department have completed numerous funded projects supported by national and international agencies. The faculty members and other professionals from the department have won prestigious national and international awards and have served in advisory capacity to the Govt. of India and numerous national and international organizations.

The Department runs MD (Psychiatry), DM (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry) and Fellowship (Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry) courses. Besides providing care to adult patients, the department also runs various clinics, viz., Lithium Clinic, Marital and Psychosexual Clinic, Mental Disability Clinic, Geriatric Clinic, Autism Clinic, Intellectual Disability Clinic, Dual Diagnosis Clinic and Oral Substitution Therapy Clinic. Besides these department provides consultation liaison psychiatry services to all the inpatient units of the hospital and at the emergency. Department also runs Electroconvulsive therapy services, Biofeedback services and repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Services. The department also runs community psychiatry services.

On an average, about 15,000 new patients are evaluated in the department and there are about 1,00,000 old patients visits to the adult psychiatry outpatient services
