Dr. Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D., 1993 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, gives the Luminary Scientist Distinguished Lecture Seminar.
Dr. Phillip A. Sharp, Ph.D. and 1993 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, was invited by the Pharmacology Graduate Students to be this year’s Luminary Scientist Distinguished Lecturer. He presented his seminar titled, “Transcription and Function of microRNAs and Other Non-coding RNAs” on April 16, 2012. The seminar was well-attended, filling the large lecture hall in MBRB to capacity. A reception followed the talk.
Dr. Sharp, who is an Institute Professor at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT, is the discoverer of RNA splicing and “discontinuous genes”. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine, and Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society, UK. He has been awarded the National Medal of Science, and the AACR Margaret Foti Award for Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research. He co-founded Biogen and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals.
