November 4, 2014

Update: The UNC Pharmacology program ranks #3 in the World in 2015, too!

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked #3 in the Top Pharmacology and Toxicology Programs in the World as published this week in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities.

This is the first global ranking of universities by U.S. News & World Report. It was undertaken to give insight into how universities and their programs compare within their own country, region and globally, both overall and within disciplines.

The overall Best Global Universities rankings encompass the top 500 institutions from 49 countries. These 500 institutions are the top out of a pool of 750 institutions ranked.

The rankings for disciplines are based on 8 indicators: global research reputation, regional research reputation, publications, normalized citation impact, total citations, number of highly cited papers, percentage of highly cited papers, and international collaboration. Institutional overall rankings also included the number of Ph.D.’s awarded, and the number of Ph.D.’s awarded per academic staff member.

UNC Pharmacology and Toxicology are ranked together by the methodology. Out of 500 universities, we ranked in the top on total number of citations (#2) and number of highly cited papers (#3). Our regional reputation (#11), and our global reputation (#27) also ranked quite highly, as did our total number of publications (#10), our normalized citation impact (#15), and the percentage of highly cited papers (#35).

The UNC pharmacology and toxicology were superseded only by pharmacology and toxicology at Harvard University and the University of California at San Francisco, which were ranked #1 and #2 respectively. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked #32 overall globally.
