My lab studies all aspects of GPCR structure and function ranging from the atomic-level analysis of ligand-receptor interactions to in vivo studies. Currently we are focused on members of the serotonin (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23519215\">5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT<\/a><\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24413399\">opioid receptor<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0families and their accessory proteins.<\/p>\n<h3>Synthetic neurobiology<\/h3>\n<p>We invented the chemogenetic technology dubbed: DREADD (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pdspdb.unc.edu\/rothlab\/research.php\">Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drug<\/a><\/strong>) which is currently used by 100\u2019s of labs around the world (see\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25937170\">Vardy et al, Neuron 2015<\/a><\/strong> for recent paper).<\/p>\n<h3>Drug Discovery<\/h3>\n<p>We are actively engaged in drug discovery efforts via the shared resources of the National Institute of Mental Health&#8217;s Psychoactive Drug Screening Program. Our goals are to discover and develop novel small molecule probes for in vitro and in vivo validation of molecular targets for therapeutic drug discovery.
