{"id":8522,"date":"2019-01-17T13:45:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T18:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/?post_type=directory&#038;p=8522"},"modified":"2025-06-17T17:26:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T21:26:35","slug":"clyde-hodge-phd","status":"publish","type":"directory","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/directory\/clyde-hodge-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Clyde Hodge, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Research Interests<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Discover the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms that mediate the reinforcing and pleasurable subjective effects of alcohol and other drugs<\/li>\n<li>Identify the long-term effects of cocaine and alcohol abuse during adolescence<\/li>\n<li>Identify novel neural targets and validate pharmacological compounds that may be used to treat problems associated with alcohol and drug abuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Research Synopsis<\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">Our studies have shown that the limbic system and extended amygdala regulate alcohol-seeking behavior and conditioned discriminative stimulus effects of alcohol. We established that neuropeptide-Y in the hypothalamus modulates excessive alcohol drinking similar to its role in obesity via the Y1 receptor, and that NPY-Y5 receptor blockade reduces the reinforcing effects of alcohol. Also, using gene knockout mice, we have shown that Protein Kinase C-\u03b5 regulates alcohol drinking, reinforcement, sensitivity, withdrawal, and mesolimbic dopamine release through enhancement of GABA-A receptor function.
