{"id":25537,"date":"2025-07-14T12:04:57","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/?page_id=25537"},"modified":"2026-04-07T13:06:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:06:00","slug":"communication-conflict-resolution-and-incident-reporting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/graduate-program\/graduate-program-outline\/communication-conflict-resolution-and-incident-reporting\/","title":{"rendered":"Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Incident Reporting"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Communication and Conflict Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>During the course of any mentor-mentee relationship, there may be periods of time when communication becomes challenging, or when basic expectations for professionalism in the mentor-mentee relationship are not being met (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/graduate-program\/graduate-program-outline\/bbsp-community-standards\/\">BBSP Community Standards<\/a>). In these instances, PHCO recommends that mentors and mentees consider the outline of possible actions below, recognizing that every situation is unique and may require its own solution.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Contact the <strong>thesis committee chair,<\/strong> the <strong>student services manager<\/strong>, the <strong>DGS<\/strong>, and\/or <strong>Dr. Laura Hawkins (Director of Learning and Work Environment for BBSP)<\/strong>, to discuss the challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Reflect on the style of communication that characterizes the mentor-mentee relationship. The book called &#8220;Crucial Conversations&#8221; can provide a useful template for advice in situations when communication has become challenging. The office of the PHCO SSM has copies of &#8220;Crucial Conversations&#8221; available for loan.<\/li>\n<li>Reflect on the history of grades and feedback that the mentor has issued to the mentee through PHCO 994, and whether that history can provide guidance during the current challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule a thesis committee meeting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Avenues for Reporting Professional Misconduct<\/h2>\n<p>If a student has experienced or witnessed any form of professional misconduct, there are several avenues for reporting and support that are available.<\/p>\n<h3>Internal to the Department<\/h3>\n<p>Students may wish to inform any one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/administration\/\">Department Administrative Team<\/a><\/strong>, including the <strong>Student Services Manager,<\/strong> the <strong>DGS<\/strong>, the <strong>T32 Director<\/strong>, the <strong>Department Chair<\/strong>, the <strong>Department Business Manager,<\/strong> or the <strong>Department HR representative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>External to the Department<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The University Compliance Office<\/strong> is an outstanding source of support. The page below provides an overview and also outlines what sorts of different steps can be taken by the reporter after filing a report (see &#8220;how to make a report&#8221; tab):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eoc.unc.edu\/what-we-do\/address-misconduct\/\">https:\/\/eoc.unc.edu\/what-we-do\/address-misconduct\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ombuds Office<\/strong> offers an avenue for confidential and informal discussion. In their own words, the Ombuds office is a place &#8220;where you can speak openly, contemplate goals, and explore options, as you navigate a confusing, unusual, or challenging situation. If you aren\u2019t sure what to do, talking with an independent and impartial ombuds can be a good next step.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ombuds.unc.edu\">https:\/\/ombuds.unc.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BBSP<\/strong> itself has also implemented a web-based system for anonymous reporting:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bbsp.unc.edu\/mistreatment-safety\/\">https:\/\/bbsp.unc.edu\/mistreatment-safety\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The DGS of GMB, Dr. Dan McKay<\/strong>, is PHCO&#8217;s designated external advisor, and can be contacted in situations when the reporter does not wish to\u00a0 discuss an incident with the PHCO Administration.<\/p>\n<h2>Threat Assessment and Management<\/h2>\n<h3>Reporting concerning behavior<\/h3>\n<p>UNC-Chapel Hill prioritizes <strong>campus safety<\/strong> by encouraging proactive participation in identifying and reporting concerning behavior to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/campussafety.unc.edu\/threat-assessment\/\">Carolina Behavioral Assessment and Management Team<\/a>,<\/strong> which employs an evidence-based approach to assess, manage and mitigate potential concerns while offering supportive resources to individuals and fostering a secure environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">&#8220;If an interaction leaves you feeling concerned, worried, or fearful for your safety or the safety of others, it\u2019s important to take it seriously.&#8221;<\/p>\n<a class=\"btn btn-primary btn-lg  oscitas-bootstrap-container\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/campussafety.unc.edu\/threat-assessment\/\">Identifying concerning behaviors and how to report them<\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Communication and Conflict Resolution During the course of any mentor-mentee relationship, there may be periods of time when communication becomes challenging, or when basic expectations for professionalism in the mentor-mentee relationship are not being met (BBSP Community Standards).
