{"id":25616,"date":"2025-07-21T15:35:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T19:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/?page_id=25616"},"modified":"2025-07-21T15:58:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T19:58:44","slug":"the-toxic-mix-during-your-phd","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pharm\/graduate-program\/mental-health-wellness\/the-toxic-mix-during-your-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"The Toxic Mix During Your PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Mental Health During Your PhD: The Toxic Mix<\/h2>\n<p>A study by the University of California, Berkeley, found nearly half of postgraduate students met criteria to classify them as depressed.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This poster explores the common stressors that PhD students may be exposed to during their PhD.<\/p>\n<h3>Imposter Syndrome<\/h3>\n<p>Most prevalent in women and minority groups, feelings of not &#8216;deserving&#8217; to be on your PhD despite having earned it are rife.<\/p>\n<h3>First Time Failing<\/h3>\n<p>Students undertaking a PhD have often never experienced failure, having done well in previous studies.<\/p>\n<h3>Presenteeism<\/h3>\n<p>Maintaining a work\/life balance can be difficult with the academic culture of overwork.<\/p>\n<h3>Tough Relationships<\/h3>\n<p>Supervisor\/student relationships be it an absent supervisor, or overbearing, can be particularly tough to manage.<\/p>\n<h3>No More Tick Boxes<\/h3>\n<p>Transitioning from taught courses to research can be difficult, particularly given the open-ended nature of research.<\/p>\n<h3>Financial Concerns<\/h3>\n<p>Money worries can lead to increased stress. Waiting long time periods to receive for example, conference reimbursement can exacerbate the issue.<\/p>\n<h3>Competitive Landscape<\/h3>\n<p>Competition not collaboration is often fostered. Given no two PhDs are the same comparing your PhD to someone else&#8217;s can be deflating.<\/p>\n<h3>Papers Please<\/h3>\n<p>Focus on research output can lead to feelings of not being &#8216;good enough&#8217; if you do not have n publications.<\/p>\n<h3>Isolation\/Guilt<\/h3>\n<p>Writing a thesis can be isolating. This can also be coupled with feelings of guilt when taking breaks.<\/p>\n<h3>Culture of Acceptance<\/h3>\n<p>In academia, there is a culture of acceptance that mental health issues are part of the journey.
