Dr. Yanping Zhang, Joint Professor in the Department of Pharmacology received the Third Annual Battle Award., which recognizes exceptional cancer research at the UNC School of Medicine and comes with a prize of $25,000. Dr. Zhang, who is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is internationally known for his research in cancer cell biology, most particularly involving the protein tumor suppressor, p53. Cell signaling pathways involving p53 are disabled in nearly all human cancers. Dr. Zhang’s recent research has involved looking at new approaches to developing pharmaceuticals to target tumors with mutations in genes regulating p53.

Dr. Zhang also received the award for his mentoring of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows and for his leadership in organizing the UNC Lineberger Postdoc-Faculty Research Conference.

The Battle Award has been awarded by the Battle Foundation of Rocky Mount, NC, since 2007. Hyman L. Battle (1896-1972) established the Battle Foundation in 1946. His grandfather, Kemp Plummer Battle, was an early president of UNC-Chapel Hill.
