Chronic blood withdrawal requires strict limits on obtained volumes and careful consideration for study time-points. A lancet is used to puncture the superficial temporal vein. A volume over 100ul is easily obtained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-98\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1329\/2023\/05\/Goldenrod_Lancet_New_Rotated-240x300-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Tail Nick<\/h3>\n<p>Tail Nick bleeds are best for small volume serial bleeds. A large gauge needle or lancet is used to puncture the vein and blood is collected in micro capillary tubes.<\/p>\n<h2>Retro-Orbital<\/h2>\n<p>Retro-orbital or orbital sinus\/plexus bleeds require scientific justification and approval through the IACUC. There are very strict requirements for timing and number of bleeds that can be performed.
