{"id":2241,"date":"2022-02-03T09:06:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T14:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pstp\/?page_id=2241"},"modified":"2022-09-12T13:18:47","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T17:18:47","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pstp\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Medicine (SOM) at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is fully committed to promoting research across the translational spectrum to bridge basic science and clinical research, and recognizes the significant role Physician-Scientists play in translational research and advancing research to practice of medicine. As a result, the School of Medicine Strategic Plan Forward Together, is supporting the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP)<\/strong><\/em><\/span> &#8211; a training program to specifically enhance the career development of Physician-Scientist trainees who are close to their transition to faculty positions. The program functions as a pipeline to recruit, train, and retain the most promising individuals to our clinical programs, and provide them with mentorship and support to foster their careers.<\/p>\n<p>The PSTP supports Physician-Scientists at two stages: the resident\/fellowship level and early-stage faculty level. For both stages, the program partners with the trainees\u2019 home departments and provide funding to support their research efforts. <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em><strong>In addition to receiving monetary support, trainees enter a career development program with peer-level physician scientists across multiple clinical disciplines.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>All trainees receive 2 years of support through PSTP<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-xs-12 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-info  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nResident \/ Fellowship Award<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>$35,000 per year in salary support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-xs-12 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nEarly-Stage Faculty Award<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>$55,000 per year in salary support<\/li>\n<li>$25,000 per year for research project support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"section-som\"><span>A Word from the Director<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2284 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/pstp\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1284\/2022\/05\/duncan-image2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>&#8220;The School of Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program provides a community of developing physician scientists at UNC with resources needed to help them navigate the transition from trainee to independent investigator, a particularly perilous career development segment for these individuals. Traditionally programs like this have arisen in single clinical departments and focus on a single medical specialty, the support across all medical specialties by this program at UNC creates a multidisciplinary environment in which allows our trainees to benefit from experiences of a larger community than they would through their departmental affiliations alone.
