Please reach out to Alex Duncan with any questions.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nominations of eligible applicants from UNC SOM clinical departments are requested annually in the spring for support to begin in July for the academic year. Each clinical department may nominate up to two eligible Physician-Scientist candidates for each award.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong><em>Individuals interested in applying for this award should consult with their Department Chair of Vice Chair for Research to learn about their department\u2019s specific procedure for determining its nominees<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"section-som\"><span>Eligibility Criteria<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-xs-12 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-info  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<strong>Resident \/ Faculty Applicants<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>MD or equivalent degree<\/li>\n<li>Licensed or qualified to become licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Commitment from home department to provide at least 50% protected time for research and fund difference between SOM PSTP funds and actual stipend \/ salary<\/li>\n<li>Must have scientific mentor and project plan in place<\/li>\n<li>May be clinical trainees (GME residents, or GME or non-GME clinical fellowship trainees with specialty training program that allow for protected research time) or postdoctoral fellows \/ clinical instructors (with a clinical degree and completion of clinical training program in an American Board of Medical Specialties discipline) at time of application<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-xs-12 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-primary  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<strong>Faculty Applicants<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>MD or equivalent degree<\/li>\n<li>Licensed or qualified to become licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Commitment from home department to provide at least 50% protected time for research and fund difference between SOM PSTP funds and actual stipend \/ salary<\/li>\n<li>Must have scientific mentor and project plan in place<\/li>\n<li>Must be currently at UNC or committed to start at UNC as an Assistant Professor at the start of the funding period<\/li>\n<li>Have held a faculty position (clinical instructor of assistant professor) for less than 2 years. <em>Some exceptions for applicants with longer times of faculty member can be considered by the review committee<\/em><\/li>\n<li>If in an Instructor position at time of application, the Department Chair must commit to opening an Assistant Professor position focused on research area specific to the trainee\u2019s interest by the end of their term of support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"section-som\"><span>Application Components <\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Completed applications should contain the following elements combined as a single PDF and should be emailed from the applicant&#8217;s Department Chair or designated representative to <a href=\"mailto:MiKayla_Feldbauer@med.unc.edu?subject=PSTP nomination\">Mikayla Feldbauer<\/a> and copy <a href=\"mailto:joseph_duncan@med.unc.edu\">Alex Duncan<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Resident \/ Fellow applications should be no longer than 3 pages<br \/>\nFaculty applications should be no longer than 4 pages &#8211; not including references<\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee052\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Specific Aims\"    >Specific Aims<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee052\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">1 page maximum \u2013 outlining the project conceptually<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee0de\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Background and Significance\"    >Background and Significance<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee0de\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Covering Literature in the field and preliminary data that support the approach. If the candidate has preliminary data the proposal should indicate whether data was generated by others in the mentor\u2019s lab or directly by the applicant<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee13a\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Approach\"    >Approach<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee13a\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Covering details of the research plan<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee16b\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Training Plan\"    >Training Plan<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee16b\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\u00bd page maximum \u2013 describe what training has been done, the current status of the applicant, the clinical and\/or scientific training will be undertaken during the training period, and any additional training the applicant will seek after participating in the SOM PSTP<\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee196\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"NIH-style Biosketch\"    >NIH-style Biosketch<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee196\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \"><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/forms\/biosketch.htm\">Click here for instructions and samples<\/a><\/div>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69e35cb8ee1c0\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"Letters of Support\"    >Letters of Support<\/span><div id=\"target-id69e35cb8ee1c0\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">Three letters are required:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Candidate\u2019s mentor who will supervise the research training while in the SOM PSTP<\/li>\n<li>Candidate\u2019s chair indicating support for protected time and paying for difference between SOM PSTP funds and full stipend\/salary, description of commitment to candidate as a future faculty member, and statement of other departmental resources committed to candidate.<\/li>\n<li>Previous mentor or other scientist familiar with the candidate\u2019s accomplishments and promise as a future independent investigator<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Applications are currently being accepted for 2026.
