Well-known author and mental-health advocate Pete Earley will be the featured speaker at the Center\u2019s second annual No Limits Gala fundraiser, November 12, 2015, at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.<\/p>\n

The event is set for 6:30\u20139:00 p.m. The evening begins with a reception, followed by dinner and Pete Earley discussing his book \u201cCrazy: A Father\u2019s Search Through America\u2019s Mental Health Madness<\/i>,\u201d which chronicles his experience as a father seeking answers and care for his son who was diagnosed with bipolar mental illness. Crazy<\/i> was a 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist.<\/p>\n

Additionally, three family members from the Foundation of Hope (Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness) will receive the Center\u2019s Community Mental Health Advocacy Awards for their contributions toward improving mental health. Shelley Eure Belk and Van Eure, along with Van\u2019s husband, Steve Thanhauser, will be recognized at the Gala. The Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness was founded by Thad Eure, Jr., in 1984 to support research to find cures for mental illness.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Center programs that serve individuals with serious mental illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo much of what the Center does is new and innovative; it is typically not paid for with traditional clinical revenue,\u201d says John Gilmore, MD, director of the Center and Thad and Alice Eure professor and vice-chair of research in the department of psychiatry. \u201cThe financial support we get through the Gala is critical to the mission of the Center. \u201c<\/p>\n

Earley is a journalist who spent six years at the Washington Post and has written 13 books including three New York Times <\/i>best sellers: Hot House<\/i>, Comrade J: The Untold Secrets of Russia’s Master Spy in America After the End of the Cold War, <\/i>and Family of Spies<\/i>.<\/p>\n
