In its 17th<\/sup> year, the Brushes with Life Arts program gives local adults living with mental illness an opportunity to display and sell their artwork. On September 19, artists, their families and other guests enjoyed the 2017 annual opening exhibit and a reception at the North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital. This year\u2019s exhibit includes 100 pieces from 30 area artists, and is on display in the Brushes with Life Gallery, located in the hospital\u2019s lobby and on the third floor.<\/p>\n

The program uses art to help artists find healing and move towards recovery. Brushes with Life art includes works from different artists working in a variety of media, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, pen, pencil, colored marker drawings, sketches and paintings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is exciting to see the number or works of art grow each year and to have the opportunity to work with the artists,\u201d says Grayson Bowen, MFA, coordinator of the Brushes with Life Arts Program. Bowen teaches art classes at the Carr Mill Clinic and at the Wake STEP and OASIS Clinics in Raleigh.<\/p>\n

Bowen and Janice Linn, executive assistant at the Center, along with several volunteers, organized the event.<\/p>\n

The free exhibit will also be open daily from 8:00 a.m. \u2013 8:00 p.m. Parking is available in the UNC Hospitals Dogwood Deck off Manning Drive and in nearby campus lots.<\/p>\n
