Medical Directors <\/b>and other community psychiatrists from around the state met at the UNC William and Ida Friday Center, April 22, for the Seventh Annual Community Psychiatrists\u2019 Leadership Network Symposium (formerly Medical Directors\u2019 Symposium.) They heard from experts on management and best practices for clinical topics, and participated in a discussion about potential changes in North Carolina’s public mental system. Approximately, 60+ psychiatrists from Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), Community Care North Carolina (CCNC), former CABHAs and Comprehensive Community Clinics (CCCs) attended the one-day program.<\/p>\n

John Gilmore, MD, director of the Network and the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health, Thad and Alice Eure Distinguished Professor and vice chair, Research and Scientific Affairs, in the Department of Psychiatry hosted the group.<\/p>\n

Jason Burke, MA, vice president of Enterprise, Analytics and Data Sciences and chief analytics officer, UNC Healthcare and School of Medicine, opened the morning session with \u201cEnabling health transformation with analytics and data sciences,\u201d an important discussion on using data in health care.<\/p>\n

A related session, \u201cA look at models of measurement-based care in integrated care in psychiatry\u201d also provided discussion by a panel of psychiatrists. Jennie Byrd, MD, PhD, CEO, Cognitive Psychiatry of Chapel Hill, PLLC; deputy chief medical officer, Community Care of North Carolina, presented an overview; Robin Reed, MD, MPH, director, integrated care and health home, UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health, assistant professor, UNC Psychiatry, discussed the specialty medical home model. Chad Stephens, MD, chief medical officer, Novant Health, shared his experiences using the Impact model.<\/p>\n

Other sessions included, Samantha Meltzer-Brody, MD, MPH, associate professor; associate chair, faculty development; and director, Perinatal Psychiatry Program, UNC Center for Women\u2019s Mood Disorders, UNC Psychiatry who presented \u201cBurnout prevention for psychiatrists.\u201d Mark McNeilly, MBA, professor of practice, Marketing & Organizational Behavior, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, provided an interactive discussion \u201cLeading in the Middle.””<\/p>\n

<\/b>During lunch, Warren Newton, MD, MPH, director of North Carolina Area Health Education Centers and vice dean at UNC School of Medicine, led an informal discussion on changes to expect in the state\u2019s mental health system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe annual meeting continues to provide community psychiatrists from across the state an opportunity to improve their leadership skills and to get updates on clinical issues they encounter in their clinics,\u201d says Gilmore.<\/p>\n
