The Center presented its Fourth Annual Medical Directors\u2019 Network Symposium \u201cLeadership and Management: The Medical Director\u2019s Role in Managing Outcomes\u201d May 17, 2014. Nearly 70 medical directors from Critical Access Behavioral Health Agencies (CABHAs) and Managed Care Organizations (MC0s) as well as psychiatrists from Carolina Care North Carolina (CCNC) and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams from around the state attended the one-day event at UNC\u2018s Ida and William Friday Continuing Education Center.<\/p>\n

David Richard, BS, deputy secretary of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Services at the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services opened the morning session with highlights of how the DHHS Medicaid reform proposal and changes in the DHHS organizational structure will affect North Carolina\u2019s public mental health system.<\/p>\n

His presentation was followed by a leadership and management session, \u201cLeading and managing in turbulent times,\u201d by David A. Hofmann, PhD, Hugh L. McColl Distinguished Professor and Area Chair of Organizational Behavior at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School who presented an interactive session on decision-making.<\/p>\n

Participants also attended sessions on how managed care organizations determine outcomes for intensive in-home services and the current implementation and impact of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team fidelity model in North Carolina<\/p>\n

\u201cThe annual meeting continues to provide medical directors across the state a unique opportunity to improve their leadership skills and to stay on top of issues they will encounter on the job,\u201d says John Gilmore, MD, director of the Network and the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health; Thad and Alice Eure Distinguished Professor and vice chair for Research & Scientific Affairs in the Department of Psychiatry. \u201cIt is also a nice opportunity to network and see how others are approaching issues common to all providers in the state\u2019s mental health system.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Network, created in 2010 by the Center in collaboration with North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (NC AHEC), provides support and professional development for medical directors and other psychiatrists in North Carolina\u2019s public mental health system.<\/p>\n
