Proceeds from the walk will be used for critical mental health programs, education, support and advocacy. The Center team raised more than $1,200 to assist NAMI in raising $155,883, which exceeded their $150,000-fundraising goal. More than<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-right\" title=\"NAMI 2015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/cecmh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/880\/2018\/10\/nami-2015-1.jpeg\" alt=\"NAMI 2015\" \/> 1,400 individuals participated in the walk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Center employees receive awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several Center employees received awards at the 2015 Department Recognition Ceremony on June 3, 2015. Janice Linn, BS, executive assistant, received the Chair\u2019s Award for Outstanding Job Performance. Leah Pribac, BBA, business officer, and Elizabeth Rossi, BA, director, quality management, received Star Heel Awards, and Fred Jarskog, MD, director, NCPRC, received the PGY-2 Teaching Award.<\/p>\n<p>Tonya Elliot, MS, research study coordinator, NCPRC, received a five-year State Service Award. Elizabeth Rossi, BA, director, quality management, and Alice Lockhart, BA, director of communications, received 15-year Service Awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Gilmore serves on panel at Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Gilmore, MD, director, Center, served on a panel at the 37th Annual Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health titled \u201cNC Mental Healthcare: Crisis, Discrimination and Solution,\u201d on January 24 at the UNC Friday Center. Other panel members included: Dave Richard, N.C. Deputy Secretary of Behavioral Healthcare and Developmental Disabilities Services; Sen. Mike Woodard; Sen. Tamara Barringer; Rep. Verla Insko; Sen. Fletcher Hartsell; Rep. Marilyn Avila; Rep. Yvonne Lewis Holley; Jim Woodall, District 15B District Attorney; and Ronnie Beale, president, North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 people attended the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brushes with Life Arts Program presents spring exhibit and opening reception<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its 16th year of providing a venue for artists recovering from mental illness to exhibit their work, Brushes with Life unveiled its new exhibition on May 19, 2015 at an opening reception from 5:30\u20137:00 p.m. of the UNC Neurosciences Hospital in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. Art is displayed as part of the Brushes with Life Gallery on the third and ground floors. More than 20 artists participated.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-right\" title=\"Brushes with Life Spring 2015 Exhibition and Reception\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/cecmh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/880\/2018\/10\/brushes-with-life-spring-2015-exhibition-and-reception.jpeg\" alt=\"Brushes with Life Spring 2015 Exhibition and Reception\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Musicians Crayton Wanders, Tim Faherty, Rick Williston, David Binanay and Adam Tierney provided entertainment for the 75 attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Created in December 2000 to support artists, Brushes with Life helps create an environment that shows individuals with serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, can be creative, perceptive and productive. The program uses art to help artists find healing and move towards recovery. Featured artists are individuals in treatment at UNC as well as members of Club Nova, a local clubhouse for persons with mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>The event was organized by Grayson Bowen, MFA, coordinator of the program and Janice Linn, executive assistant. (Art shown &#8220;Peppers: by artist Rebecca McCullough).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second annual No Limits fundraising gala features Pete Earley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mark your calendar for November 12, 2015 for the Center\u2019s second annual No Limits gala. Renowned writer and mental health advocate Pete Earley will be the featured speaker at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center\u2019s Carolina Club.
