Dr. Clayton is a clinical professor of psychiatry in the UNC Department of Psychiatry. Her clinical focus is working as a psychiatrist at the WakeBrook inpatient unit in Raleigh. Her clinical interests are working with individuals with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She was previously on the faculty at the UNC Dept of Psychiatry doing predominantly inpatient work on the Psychotic Disorders and Geropsychiatry unit from 1998 to 2007. She was also involved in psychiatry resident and medical student training. She was the Medical Director of the Psychotic Disorders Inpatient unit from 1998 to 2007 and was involved as founding co-chairman in the Brushes with Life: Art, Artists & Mental Illness gallery from 2000 to 2007. She and her family then moved to Christchurch New Zealand where she did inpatient and outpatient community mental health work at the Canterbury District Health Board and was involved in teaching psychiatric registrars, house officers and medical students from the University of Otago School of Medicine in Christchurch until mid 2013.
