As a neurogeneticist in the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders, Dr. Yilmaz’s main research focus is genetics of eating disorders. Her NIMH-funded project (K01 MH109782) examines shared genetic and environmental risk factors for anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder using Danish DNA samples and data from the Danish population registers. Other research interests include genetic and epidemiological examination of low body weight in anorexia nervosa and weight dysregulation in eating disorders, cross-disorder examination of eating disorders and comorbid psychiatric conditions, ADHD symptoms in individuals with eating disorders, mitochondrial variation in eating disorders, and genetics of severe and enduring anorexia nervosa. Dr. Yilmaz is part of the lead analytical team for the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) Eating Disorders Working Group and is a member of multiple professional organizations including the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics, American Society of Human Genetics, and the Academy for Eating Disorders.
