This study aims to better understand the early symptoms most commonly experienced by our clients, along with reasons that the psychosis was not treated.<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-inline\" style=\"width: 321px;height: 197px;float: left;margin: 1em;margin-left: 0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/oasis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/718\/2018\/06\/71H.jpg\" width=\"201\" height=\"133\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Early recognition and treatment of Schizophrenia has the potential to eliminate symptoms for 70% of those diagnosed with Schizophrenia<sup>1<\/sup>. However, literature reviews indicate the average delay of treatment from onset of psychosis to initiation of antipsychotic treatment is 66 weeks<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Untreated psychosis is distressing, derails normal development and is associated with behavioral disturbances that may be embarrassing, aggressive or have legal consequences<sup>3,4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>DUP has emerged as an independent predictor of likelihood and extent of recovery from an initial first episode<sup>5<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to better recognize the early symptoms of Psychosis most frequently experienced by our clients, along with the reasons treatment was not initiated right upon emergence of symptoms, the DUP Study was created and executed by Dr. Perkins and clinicians at the OASIS Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Interview included the following clinical measures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Symptom Onset in Schizophrenia (SOS)-The SOS rates the presence and dates the onset of 16 general prodromal, positive, negative, and disorganizational symptoms, as well as a clinician, family, and patient global rating of onset of illness.<\/li>\n<li>Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I)-The SCID-I is a semi-structured interview for making the major DSM-IV Axis I diagnoses.<\/li>\n<li>Personality Assessment Screener (PAS)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DUP stands for Duration of Untreated Psychosis, which refers to the time period in which a person has developed psychosis, but has not yet begun treatment.
