A message from the Vice-Chair of Research, Dr. John Gilmore<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since its inception in 1952, the Department of Psychiatry has been deeply committed to research, particularly the integration of clinical and basic research. Today, it hosts nationally-renowned programs in areas such as schizophrenia, eating disorders, women\u2019s mood disorders, neurostimulation, neurodevelopmental disorders, and substance abuse.<\/p>\n

Our faculty benefit from a robust research infrastructure, including biostatistics\/data management, informatics, and neuroimaging cores. We also have the North Carolina Psychiatric Research Center in Raleigh, which supports numerous clinical trials.<\/p>\n

Our research excellence attracts significant funding from the National Institutes of Health, foundations, and industry. In 2023, we secured over $20 million in NIH funding, ranking 15th nationally among psychiatry departments for federal research funding. Within the UNC School of Medicine, we have the second highest research funding among all departments and are second only to the Department of Medicine among clinical departments.<\/p>\n

This creates an exceptional environment for research training, detailed further in the Research Training section.<\/p>\n
