I believe that supporting people with addiction means seeing the whole person, and that philosophy is deeply woven into the fellowship at UNC. I\u2019ve had roots in the Triangle for over a decade, and during that time, I\u2019ve developed a strong respect for the people and communities across North Carolina. I repeatedly witnessed addiction attendings, fellows, case managers, social workers, peer supporters, pharmacists, and support staff going the extra mile to help patients. \u202fI am excited to continue my training with a group that is so committed to empowering our patients.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Catching up with some of our fellowship graduates\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna Peyton, DO \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Peyton, whose background is in family medicine, is a member of the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, where she provides addiction medicine services and is involved in training residents and fellows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawn Kendrick, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kendrick, whose background is in emergency medicine, is a member of the faculty at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where she works in ECU\u2019s addiction medicine program. Dr. Kendrick also spends time providing emergency medicine services at ECU.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caitlin Mahoney, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mahoney, whose background is in family medicine, is employed by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction as an addiction medicine specialist involved in expanding opioid use disorder treatment services to individuals incarcerate in the North Carolina state prison system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando Boria Gonzalez, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Boria Gonzalez, whose background is in family medicine, is employed as a physician at Sutter Health in California, where he incorporates substance use treatment into his primary care practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kory Dawson, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dawson, whose background is in emergency medicine, currently has dual appointments in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Psychiatry at Duke Health. He spends time working in the Duke Regional Hospital Emergency Department as well as in the Duke Regional Hospital Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic, where he provides substance use treatment services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peter Le, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Le, whose background is in internal medicine, currently works as a hospitalist at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. At UNC Rex Hospital, Dr. Le is involved in providing inpatient substance use treatment services to hospitalized patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huma Tahir, DO \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tahir, whose background is in family medicine, provides addiction medicine services with the VA Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program located in Tuskegee, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christopher Thompson, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thompson, whose background is in family medicine and hospice\/palliative care, currently leads the Addiction Medicine Service at WakeMed Health and Hospitals, the largest hospital system in Wake County, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Madeline McCrary, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. McCrary, whose background is in internal medicine and infectious diseases, is on the faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases and serves as Medical Director of the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uma Pendem, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pendem, whose background is in family medicine, is on the faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at Duke Health, where she provides outpatient primary care and substance use treatment services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denise Torres, MD, MPH, CMRO \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Torres, whose background is in preventive medicine, is a faculty member with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Florida State University at Lee Memorial Hospital, where she provides addiction medicine and primary care services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parth Saraiya, MD, MPH \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Saraiya, whose background is in preventive medicine, provides addiction treatment services at the CleanSlate Opioid Treatment Program located in Richmond, Virginia. He previously served as Medical Director for Substance Use at Agape Health Services in Washington, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Ceglowski, MD, MBA \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ceglowski, whose background is in emergency medicine, practices as an addiction medicine specialist in Jacksonville, Florida. He previously served as Medical Director at<\/p>\n<p>Bayside Marin Treatment Center, a comprehensive addiction treatment program located in San Rafael, California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sravanthi Utpala, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Utpala, whose background is in psychiatry, provides addiction medicine and psychiatric services with Atrium Health Behavioral Health and Counseling in Concord, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alessia Bhargava, MD, MBA \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bhargava, whose background is in psychiatry, provides psychiatric services with LinqCare also serves as a consulting physician at Bayside Marin Treatment Center, a comprehensive addiction treatment program located in San Rafael, California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Ryan, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ryan, whose background is in obstetrics-gynecology, is a member of the faculty at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where he leads ECU\u2019s Addiction Medicine Program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameron Coleman, MD, MPS \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Coleman, whose background is in preventive medicine, serves as Chief of Addiction Services at Avance Care in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he oversees an outpatient treatment program for patients with substance use disorders and addiction. Prior to joining Avance Care, Dr. Coleman was on the addiction medicine faculty at University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Baca-Atlas, MD \u2013 Fellowship Class of 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Baca-Atlas, whose background is in family medicine, is the very first graduate of the UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He is a member of the faculty in the UNC Department of Family Medicine and serves as Medical Director of UNC REACH Enhanced Primary Care as well as Associate Medical Director of the UNC Tobacco Treatment Program.
