Many residents who participate in this program first-author papers, present posters at conferences, speak at Grand Rounds, and give talks at professional meetings, all before they even complete their residency.<\/p>\n<p>This elective track (applications are accepted midway through the PGY-1 training year) is designed to provide progressive and intensive research training and experience to residents. Training opportunities are available in a wide range of clinical and neuroscientific disciplines, including:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-2 col-md-2 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 hidden-sm hidden-xs oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-5 col-md-5 col-xs-6 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>descriptive phenomenology<\/li>\n<li>clinical psychpharmacology<\/li>\n<li>epidemiologic &amp; molecular genetics<\/li>\n<li>behavioral &amp; molecular pharmacology<\/li>\n<li>molecular &amp; developmental neurobiology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-5 col-md-5 col-xs-6 col-sm-6 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<ul>\n<li>epidemiology<\/li>\n<li>neuropsychology<\/li>\n<li>neurophysiology<\/li>\n<li>neuroimaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>PGY-1<\/h2>\n<p>Interns interested in the Resident Research Track apply during the middle of their PGY-1 year, and\u00a0are encouraged to meet with Dr. Gaynes\u00a0to discuss their areas of interest, training goals, and identify prospective mentors.\u00a0The application consists of a <strong>one page proposal statement<\/strong>\u00a0identifying the applicant&#8217;s research mentor and detailing specific research goals and plans. \u00a0The number of residents admitted each year varies on interest and availability.<\/p>\n<h2>PGY-2<\/h2>\n<p>Residents selected for the Resident Research Track have\u00a0<strong>at least 1 day per week<\/strong> devoted to research and research training. The exact schedule will vary, depending on the availability of the resident and research mentor, as well as the requirements of the specific research being conducted. This protected time could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>participation\/implementation of research protocols on clinical service rotations,<\/li>\n<li>development of an independent research project, or<\/li>\n<li>laboratory-based training experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Didactic activities could include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>directed readings and tutorials,<\/li>\n<li>supervisory meetings with their research mentor, and<\/li>\n<li>participation in lab meetings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the resident will have the opportunity to take the NIH Human Subjects Training Course, participate in journal clubs, and attend seminars in Alcohol &amp; Substance Abuse, Schizophrenia, Autism, Neuroimaging, Women&#8217;s Mood Disorders, Eating Disorder research, and others.<\/p>\n<h2>PGY-3<\/h2>\n<p>Residents typically spend a <strong>minimum of \u00bd day per week<\/strong> devoted to continuing their research activities.\u00a0In addition, they can elect to serve as a research psychiatrist in the\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/cecmh\/patient-client-information\/step-research-clinic-ncprc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The North Carolina Psychiatric Research Center<\/a>. \u00a0This research center is located at Central Regional Hospital and is the principal clinical site for Experimental Therapeutics Research associated with the UNC Mental Health Clinical Research Center.<\/p>\n<h3>Other clinical research options include\u00a0rotations through:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>the Early Psychosis Research Program of the STEP Clinic,<\/li>\n<li>the Pediatric Psychosis Research Program,<\/li>\n<li>the Mood Disorders Research Program, and<\/li>\n<li>the Eating Disorders Research Program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>PGY-4<\/h2>\n<p>PGY-4 residents in the Resident Research Track may devote <strong>up to 80% of their year<\/strong>\u00a0to research and research training.\u00a0 They will continue to work with their mentor on their research project and in addition, will receive instruction in scientific scholarship, writing for professional journals, and fundraising\/grantsmanship.
