{"id":14318,"date":"2024-07-03T13:29:27","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T17:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/?post_type=ud_entry&#038;p=14318"},"modified":"2026-04-06T11:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T15:01:14","slug":"samantha-meltzer-brody","status":"publish","type":"ud_entry","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/psych\/people\/samantha-meltzer-brody\/","title":{"rendered":"Samantha Meltzer-Brody, MD, MPH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Meltzer-Brody was named the Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine in January 2025. From 2019 until March 2025, she served as the Assad Meymandi Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also directed the UNC Center for Women\u2019s Mood Disorders. As Chair, Dr. Meltzer-Brody collaborated with UNC Health and the state of North Carolina on innovation and transformation of mental health care. Previously, Dr. Meltzer-Brody founded the UNC \u201cTaking Care of Our Own\u201d mental health program in 2011 and played an important in leading UNC Health Well-Being initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Meltzer-Brody is also an internationally recognized physician-scientist in perinatal depression. Her research has investigated the epidemiologic and biological predictors of perinatal depression and innovative treatment approaches (pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic). She served as the academic PI for novel psychopharmacologic clinical trials to develop the first FDA approved medication for postpartum depression (brexanolone), and served as an investigator for the newly approved oral drug (zuranolone) for PPD. She has also served as a co-PI for a PCORI funded study to scale psychotherapy for perinatal depression using trained non-specialists and virtual delivery of care.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Meltzer-Brody has received numerous awards for her work. In 2025, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine,\u00a0one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.
