He serves as an attending psychiatrist on inpatient psychiatry units, where he evaluates and manages patients with serious mental illnesses. Additionally, he provides psychiatric care for incarcerated individuals at Central Prison, including those on an acute stabilization unit, pretrial individuals requiring inpatient care under Safekeeping orders, and individuals on Death Row. Dr. Vitiello also evaluates patients through two clinics under the Matthew Gfeller Center, focusing on the impact of head injuries in two unique patient populations. In these clinics, he sees veterans and first responders with traumatic brain injuries and\/or post-traumatic stress disorder through the THRIVE Program, as well as retired NFL players through the Brain and Body Program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After completing his forensic psychiatry fellowship at the Yale Division of Law and Psychiatry, Dr. Vitiello returned to UNC to help expand the Forensic Psychiatry Program and Clinic, where he conducts both criminal and civil forensic evaluations. He is also passionate about teaching at the intersection of psychiatry and law. He holds an Adjunct Faculty appointment at the UNC School of Law, where he teaches Psychiatry and the Law. Additionally, he instructs psychiatry residents on forensic psychiatry topics through a didactic series.
