When Dr. Jnana Aditya Challa interviewed at UNC Radiology, it wasn’t just the cutting-edge technology or growing Molecular Imaging and Theranostics program that caught his attention. It was the people.
“Everybody there was really friendly,” he recalls. “From the front desk staff to the faculty and residents, all of my interactions were great. I immediately felt welcomed.”
That first impression set the stage for what ultimately made UNC the right fit. This summer, Dr. Challa will join the Department of Radiology as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Molecular Imaging and Theranostics (MIT) division, bringing with him a unique combination of expertise in nuclear medicine, computer science, and an unwavering passion for innovation.
A Perfect Match for His Training
Dr. Challa recently completed his residency in Nuclear Medicine at the University of Maryland. He has trained across the full spectrum of nuclear medicine, including PET imaging, Nuclear cardiology, and Theranostics—an emerging field that combines diagnostic imaging and targeted radiopharmaceutical therapies for conditions such as neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer.
“I felt that UNC would allow me to utilize the full potential of my training,” he says. “I’ll be able to do both imaging and treatment, which is exactly what I’m looking for.”
From Computer Science to Patient Care
Long before he entered medicine, Dr. Challa was fascinated by technology.
Growing up in a family of engineers and computer scientists, he became the go-to person for fixing computers. In high school, he earned computer repair certifications and developed a knack for diagnosing hardware and software issues. That passion eventually led him to study computer science at the University of California, Berkeley.
Looking back, he realizes there was a connection between those early interests and the physician he would become.
“I felt like I was a doctor for computers,” he says with a laugh. “I could diagnose problems and fix them. Then I thought, what’s the next step? How can I use those problem-solving skills to help people?”
Medicine provided that answer.
What appealed to him most was diagnosis—the ability to identify exactly what was wrong and guide treatment accordingly. Nuclear Medicine, with its technology-driven approach, sophisticated imaging tools and targeted treatment options, felt like a natural fit.
“Its the perfect blend,” he says. “I can diagnose disease through imaging and also directly treat patients. It’s the combination of both that I really love.”
Pushing the Boundaries of Artificial Intelligence
Dr. Challa’s technological background continues to shape his vision for the future of nuclear medicine.
One of his primary research interests is the application of artificial intelligence to improve clinical workflows and support physicians.
“My goal is for AI to help with gathering clinical history, enabling seamless image annotations and allowing for an overall efficient workflow so physicians can focus on what matters the most.”
That vision aligns closely with what attracted him to UNC in the first place.
Why Academic Medicine?
While Dr. Challa explored opportunities in both private practice and academic medicine, he ultimately found himself drawn to teaching and the collaborative nature of an academic environment.
“I love reading cases and taking care of patients, and I also equally enjoy teaching, the opportunity to pursue research and collaborate with colleagues who share those interests.”
At UNC, he found a culture where teaching, innovation and clinical excellence go hand in hand.
“During my interview, teaching and research came up constantly,” he recalls. “There are ample opportunities to contribute academically.”
An Open Door—and an Open Mind
As he begins his career at UNC, Dr. Challa hopes colleagues will know one thing above all else: he’s approachable.
Whether it’s a patient with questions, a technologist seeking a second opinion, or a colleague interested in brainstorming ideas, he’s always happy to connect.
“I love when people come to me with questions,” he says. “We all work together to provide the best possible patient care.”
His commitment to efficiency is another defining characteristic—so much so that when asked to describe himself in a single word, his answer came immediately:
“Efficient.”
It’s a philosophy that extends beyond technology and workflow design. For Dr. Challa, efficiency means finding optimal ways to solve problems, collaborate with others, and ultimately improve the experience for both providers and patients.
Life Beyond the Reading Room
Outside of work, Dr. Challa is just as energetic.
A strong believer in work-life balance, he plays basketball regularly—sometimes up to three hours a day—and enjoys badminton, hiking, biking, and exploring the outdoors with his wife. The natural beauty of Chapel Hill and the surrounding region was one of the many reasons the couple was excited to make North Carolina their new home.
They’re also adventurous in the kitchen, frequently experimenting with new cuisines and recipes. Dr. Challa enjoys cooking Mexican and Indian dishes, while his wife often explores Korean and Japanese-inspired dishes and baking.
And while his passion for medicine runs deep, his love of technology remains ever-present.
Whether it’s discussing the latest advances in computing, comparing electric vehicles, or helping someone troubleshoot a stubborn technical issue, Dr. Challa is always eager to talk tech.
Looking Ahead
As UNC Radiology continues to expand its leadership in molecular imaging and theranostics, Dr. Challa brings a unique blend of clinical expertise, technological insight, and enthusiasm for the future.
His inspiration comes from inventors like Nikola Tesla, whose ability to imagine groundbreaking possibilities continues to influence how Dr. Challa approaches innovation today.
Now, as he joins UNC Radiology, he’s eager to help shape the next generation of nuclear medicine—one that leverages emerging technologies while keeping patient care firmly at its center.
