Message to Applicants

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and learn more about UNC Radiology Residency! At UNC, our program promises not only excellent clinical training, amazing research, and global health opportunities, but also lifetime friends and mentors.

UNC Hospitals is a Level 1 trauma center with multiple hospitals on-site including our state-of-the-art Lineberger Cancer Center, North Carolina Women’s Hospital, North Carolina Children’s Hospital, and North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital. Our department also services UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus and multiple off-site imaging centers and clinics. At UNC, we provide complex care to patients from all over the state, allowing for a large volume of studies and a breadth of pathology to learn. This combined with independent overnight call allows our residents to leave UNC well versed in all radiologic subspecialties and confident in their abilities to interpret high volume and complex imaging.

UNC Radiology is committed to resident education, research, and wellness as exemplified by opportunities to attend national conferences, a book fund for resident educational resources, and many social and wellness events throughout the year. What primarily sets our residency apart is the people and the spirit of our department. Our residents are from diverse backgrounds and varied life experiences that we value and support.

At the root of our values is a philosophy that legendary UNC basketball coach Dean Smith instilled in his players over the course of his amazing career — “The Carolina Way.” This philosophy is aimed at fostering a culture of excellence built on the foundation of commitment to others and integrity.

Please take some time to explore our website further and learn about who we are. We welcome any questions about the department, our Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology programs, or life in Chapel Hill. We hope to meet you soon so you can experience “The Carolina Way” firsthand.

Sincerely,

Caleb Epps, MD

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I submit applications in the same match season to both the Diagnostic Radiology and Integrated IRresidency programs?
Both residency programs participate in the NRMP Match, and all applicants should upload a completed Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application for our Residency Review Committee to evaluate.
What clinical experience is required to be appointed as a resident of these programs in your Department?
PGY2 (R1) Diagnostic Radiology residents must have completed their PGY1 clinical/internship year by the time they are appointed as Department trainees. Individuals applying to our Integrated IR program must meet this requirement and match to our Diagnostic Radiology program to dually train in both residencies.  Applicants who match to Diagnostic Radiology are entering an advanced NRMP residency program.
What research experience is required to be appointed as a resident in your Department?
Prior research experience is not required to be appointed as a resident of either program in our Department. Published research, or research experience, is one of multiple factors considered in review of residency applications.
Do you have any minimum requirements for board scores?
Board scores are among a number of factors considered in selecting applicants for interviews. There are no minimum score requirements. Our residency programs accept both USMLE and COMLEX scores – Steps 1 and 2, or just Step 1 — for review.
Can I submit more than three recommendation letters?
A minimum of three (3) letters of reference (LOR)s is needed to complete an ERAS application to our programs. A maximum of four LORs may be assigned per residency program.
What is the cutoff graduation date to enter as a PGY2 (R1) in your program?
There is no cutoff medical school graduation date to apply or be appointed as a resident in either residency program. PGY2 (R1) residents must have completed their PGY1 clinical year by the time of their PGY2 start date in our Department.
Do you accept applications from osteopathic (DO) medical students?
Our Department has invited both MD and DO students for interviews and has trained DOs in both our residency and fellowship programs.
Do you accept applications from International Medical Graduates (IMGs)?
Our residency programs give consideration to medical student applications from both U.S.-based and foreign medical schools. Reputation of medical school is among a number of factors considered in selecting applicants to invite for interviews.
What type of visas does your program sponsor?
UNC Hospitals sponsors only J1 visas (no exceptions) for all residency and subspecialty programs, including Diagnostic Radiology and Integrated IR.
