Word from Our Residency Program Directors

Excellence in clinical, educational, and scholarly missions
UNC Department of Radiology does it all, and does it the Carolina Way!

Located in Chapel Hill on the campus of the nation’s oldest public university, UNC Hospitals (a.k.a. UNC Medical Center), is a state-of-the-art, 900+-bed facility caring for more than 37,000 patients each year. The medical campus consists of five connected hospitals and the School of Medicine (UNC SOM). The hospitals are the NC Cancer Hospital, NC Children’s Hospital, NC Memorial Hospital, NC Neurosciences Hospital, and NC Women’s Hospital. Since July 2015, a second UNC Hospitals acute-care campus just 10 miles north in Hillsborough, NC has further extended our premier academic medical center’s patient care to the people of North Carolina. UNC School of Medicine has a proud tradition of excellence in educating tomorrow’s health care professionals and biomedical researchers. Our top-tier institution delivers the best medical care with sensitivity, compassion and genuine interest in people and their families.
Our Integrated IR and Independent IR residency programs offer an innovative and integrated curriculum in state-of-the-art facilities. Daily conference room formal lectures and reading room case-based learning, monthly Grand Rounds, weekly multidisciplinary conferences, electronic educational resources, resident attendance at the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) and ABR Core exam prep – all are keenly emphasized in our mission to educate. Our renowned faculty are at the top of their respective subspecialty fields. Further, in professional societies, research achievement, and state and national leadership roles, key faculty have uniquely networked with peer academic institutions and premiere radiology practice groups across the nation. UNC Radiology is a resource-rich environment for you as a prospective trainee.

In addition to being a large tertiary care center with referrals from across North Carolina and neighboring states, UNC has a large primary care footprint. These combine to ensure our trainees receive exemplary training in both common and uncommon diseases, and we have thoughtfully balanced fellowship allotments to ensure our residents receive well-rounded training and ample procedure opportunities. We believe in experiential learning! Our location in the center of the state, adjacent to Research Triangle Park, the state capital and in close vicinity to Duke University and North Carolina State University, further enriches our academic opportunities.

Last but no means least, our great location provides ample opportunities for extra-curricular activities at the beach and in the mountains even for day trips. On site, on point, on your way to professional and personal greatness – the Carolina Way! We at UNC look forward to meeting you.
