The Department would like to recognize Associate Professor and Carolina Mammography Registry Director Louise Henderson, PhD, for being selected as a 2018 UNC School of Medicine (SOM) Yang Family Biomedical Scholar. Created and sponsored by Lenovo CEO and UNC alumnus Mr. Yuanqing Yang, this award recognizes tenured SOM faculty such as Henderson who have an established and nationally recognized scholarly record in their field. Each year the UNC SOM awards three faculty as members into the Yang Biomedical Scholars Society. The award provides Henderson with access to $75,000 to further her research program and integrate cutting-edge biomedical research within her area of investigation.

Henderson additionally received a UNC Lineberger Developmental Grant in June 2018 for proposed research entitled, “A Multidisciplinary Collaboration to Assess Use of Guideline Recommended Molecular Biomarker Testing in Rural Versus Urban Lung Cancer Patients.” Over two years, this $175K grant enables Henderson, co-principal investigator Dr. M. Patricia Rivera and their team to explore rural/urban disparities and fill a knowledge gap in understanding how molecular biomarker testing for patients with advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) is being used in a population setting. The long-term goal of this project is to improve the use of biomarker testing for all patients with NSCLC.

Over almost a decade as SOM faculty, Henderson’s scholarly honors have been wide-ranging, including: 1) 2014-2015 SOM Academic Career Leadership Academy in Medicine (ACCLAIM) Program scholar; and 2) Recipient of the Editor’s Recognition Award – “Reviewing with Special Distinction” (top 5% of Radiology reviewers).
