Smith is a well-established Department leader in clinical affairs, administration, and clinical research. Since joining the Department in 1996, his leadership in these areas has been reflected through multiple appointments, amongst them: 1) Director of Clinical Faculty Development (2016-present); 2) Director of Clinical Research (2015- 2018); 3) Vice Chair of Diagnostic Services (2015-2018); 3) UNC Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) Clinical Associate Director and Quality and Safety Officer (2011-2014); and 4) Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director (2007-2011). At the institutional level, Smith was selected in 2010 as a UNC School of Medicine Mid-Career Leadership Development participant. He was also named a UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators Fellow in 2011. During his time as Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director, Smith was selected as a 2007-2008 UNC School of Medicine Teaching Scholar.
Smith noted: “I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Molina for mentoring and nurturing the administrative leadership aspect of my career. I feel humbled and honored to take on the position he occupied and filled so well.”
