Weili Lin, PhD

The Department would like to congratulate Weili Lin, PhD, for his selection amongst 42 researchers to receive the 2018 Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research.  Lin and other award recipients will be inducted into the Academy’s Council of Distinguished Investigators during a ceremony to be held in November 2018 at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)’s annual meeting.

Lin has earned multiple honors in biomedical imaging and the neurosciences.  In 2012, he was selected to become both a American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering Fellow and a American Society of Neuroradiology Research Fellow. These honors are backed by Lin’s publication of 250+ peer-reviewed papers in three major areas of research — early brain functional and structural development, quantitative brain oxygen metabolism and hybrid PET/MR. Lin currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Translational Stroke Research and Radiology Research and Practice. He is also a Reviewer for multiple journals, ranging from those related to his imaging expertise (eg, J of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Stroke), to broader journals dedicated to imaging and the field of medicine (eg, JAMA, Radiology).

At UNC, Lin’s advancements over almost 20 years in these fields have earned him multiple leadership appointments. Since 2011, he has served as Director of UNC’s Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC), which serves the imaging needs of University researchers and advances the rapidly developing science of biomedical imaging.  Lin also serves as Professor in the Departments of Radiology, Neuroradiology and Biomedical Engineering, as well as UNC’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy. In 1991, he earned distinction as the Dixie Lee Boney Soo Distinguished Professor in Neurological Medicine. Since 2007, Lin has served as the Department’s Vice Chair of Basic Research. He also serves as Chair of multiple Joint Recruitment Committees specific to recruiting BRIC and Department of Radiology faculty.

Lin noted: “It has been a great honor to receive the 2018 Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research.   I would like to thank the [organization] for recognizing my scholarly achievements in the wide-ranging field of radiology, as well as my efforts to advance translational science in biomedical imaging.”
