UNC Department of Radiology is thrilled that Maureen P. Kohi, MD, FSIR, FAHA, Professor of Radiology, has begun her tenure as our new Chair! Dr. Kohi comes to UNC after 14 years of establishing her roots in academic radiology at the University of California – San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging. Dr. Kohi graduated from New York Medical College with honors in 2005. She trained as an intern (Internal Medicine: 2005-2006) at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency (2006 – 2010) and subsequent fellowship training in two subspecialty programs – Vascular and Interventional Radiology (2010 – 2011) and Women’s Imaging (2011 – 2012) at UCSF. Passionate for patient care, education, and research, Dr. Kohi was recruited to join the UCSF Radiology Department’s faculty as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology in 2012 and was promoted to the rank of Associated Professor of Clinical Radiology in 2016.

A highly regarded physician by both the Department and the Institution, Dr. Kohi served in a range of leadership capacities over her eight years at UCSF, among them: Division Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (2017 – 2020); Co-Director – Focused Ultrasound (2016 – 2020); Associate Program Director – VIR residency and fellowship programs (2016 – 2017); and Site Director – UCSF Mission Bay Hospital (2016 – 2017).

Dr. Kohi is a well-known leader in VIR clinical care, education, and research, as well as a nationally recognized women’s health advocate. She has received many honors recognizing her commitment and service to academic radiology and major areas of advocacy in medicine, including: Women of UCSF Health Spotlight Award (2020); Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA, 2020); Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology (FSIR, 2017), Distinguished Reviewer – JVIR (2016); Excellence in Teaching Award, UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators (2014); and NIH-T32 Research Fellow (2008).

Dr. Kohi noted: “I’m honored to lead this outstanding department and thrilled at the opportunity to work with such talented faculty, learners, and staff who work tirelessly to contribute to the mission and vision of UNC Health.”

The Department’s Interim Chair (2019-2020) J. Keith Smith, MD, PhD, FACR, stated: “Dr. Kohi brings energy, insight, and great national connections. She has hit the ground running, and I look forward to working with her. The future of our department looks really bright.”
