I chose UNC because the Triangle seemed like a great place to live, the faculty were very welcoming and the environment seemed great for learning. So far, everything has been as good or better than expected.”

“UNC has it all! We serve a diverse patient population that provides us with extensive pathology and learning opportunities.  The attendings are excellent teachers and mentors and the program fosters our academic interests while prioritizing resident wellness.  My co-residents are hardworking and accomplished, and we have fun in and out of the hospital.  I can’t imagine training anywhere else.”

I chose UNC for residency because I knew I would receive excellent clinical training in an academic environment surrounded by incredibly kind colleagues and faculty. UNC provides an opportunity to serve the people of North Carolina (and abroad) while having access to incredible resources for research and learning. Since arriving at UNC for training, all of my expectations for the program have been more than exceeded. My co-residents are wonderful, the faculty are dedicated to teaching, and the program itself is very supportive. I am looking forward to my next four years of training at UNC, and I know I will be more than prepared for my future career as a radiologist.”

Internship: UNC Hospitals (Internal Medicine)

UNC was a great fit for me: Loved the down-to-earthiness of the residents I met during pre-interview dinner and on interview day, and also Dr Jordan, our program director. Compared to all other interviews, I left UNC having a good understanding of the strengths of the program, and future plans for improvement. It also helped that my family decided to make the move to North Carolina, which is a peaceful environment to raise my two energetic little boys.”

Jaspreet Hira, MD, MS

Undergraduate: Virginia Tech
Medical School: University of VA
Internship: Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s – Roosevelt  (Internal Medicine)

“By the end of the interview trail, I had come to realize that plenty of programs would be able to provide me with excellent training in terms of volume, diversity of cases, didactics, etc. However, one program stood out as a place where all of the residents thrived in a friendly, nurturing environment. This is why I chose UNC and it has certainly lived up to these expectations!”

Barry Keane, MD, MSc

Undergraduate: Wake Forest University
Medical School: Medical University of SC
Internship: Trident Medical Center (MUSC)  (Transitional Year)

“What drew me to UNC for residency was the sense of camaraderie I observed among the residents during my time interviewing with the program. From the interview dinner to the following interview day, the sense of welcoming I experienced was something I had not encountered at most institutions; this sense of community, in addition to the location in Chapel Hill, supportive faculty, and strong curriculum confirmed my choice to make UNC my top program. Having been part of the program for a few months now, I’m happy to report that the experiences I’ve had have assured me that I made the right choice.”

Huberta Koudoro, MD

Undergraduate: Mount Holyoke
Medical School: George Washington University
Internship: St. Vincent Hospital – Worcester, MA (Internal Medicine)
I fell in love with UNC when I came for the Carolina First event a few months prior to starting the residency application process. My interview at UNC only confirmed that this was the place where I wanted to complete my training. The faculty and residents I met where very kind which made me feel like home.”

Dustin Rea, MD

Undergraduate: University of VA
Medical School: UNC – Chapel Hill
Internship: New Hanover Regional Medical Center (Internal Medicine)
As a medical student at UNC, I had the opportunity to see the radiology program up close. The faculty and residents were always kind and never hesitated to get me involved and teach me something. This has continued into residency as the learning atmosphere is supportive and high volume provides exposure to complex and diverse pathology. I’m beyond thankful for the opportunity to stay here at UNC.”

Sean Wagner, MD, MS

Undergraduate: Penn State University
Medical School: Georgetown University
Internship: Reading Health System (Transitional Year)
Simply put, I chose UNC Radiology first and foremost because of the people. Throughout my interview day, and at the dinner the night before, I met so many residents that instantly made me feel at home. They answered the typical interviewee questions of course, but we also had other conversations unrelated to medicine too. I knew that I wanted a program that had individuals with both a passion for radiology, but also with interests outside the hospital, and I could tell the people here fit that description. As we walked around to the different reading rooms, each attending greeted us with genuine excitement and made us feel welcome. I felt like I could fit right in and that the people I’d be working with would both challenge and support me on a daily basis. Besides all that, the Chapel Hill/Durham/Raleigh area is a great place to live, work, and enjoy with plenty of activities, restaurants, and (most importantly) breweries to explore! I would undoubtedly make the same decision again and couldn’t be happier with my choice!”
