Heading into this new year, we’ve got very newsworthy updates on Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) to share!

Sheri Jordan, MD, RCC Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director

DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY Graduate Medical Education (GME) UPDATE:

We’ve had an energetic and energizing quarter. October and November brought residency recruitment season, one we anticipate will be equally successful as recent years past. We interviewed 78 applicants for nine Diagnostic Radiology spots, hailing from top-notch medical schools from Cali to the Carolinas. Late November brought RSNA participation, with four of our residents as first authors. December brought team-building activities, with an emphasis on the Healthy Lifestyles focus of ACGME’s Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER). Well-being events during the quarter included a mid-day stadium walk (weather permitting!), Giving thanks luncheon, holiday happy hour, R4-R1 resident mentor meetings, and our first annual ugly holiday attire contest with dessert bar. With our residency metrics at an all-time high (# of studies interpreted, residents’ scholarly activities, standardized test scores, # of residents, # of residents staying at UNC as fellows, among other metrics), our program’s well-being emphases are all the more important and dovetail with national and institutional emphases on wellness.

UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (UME) UPDATE:

Our undergraduate medical education mission emphases and accomplishments for the quarter were equally whirlwind-like.  Since the introduction of UNC School of Medicine’s Translational Education at Carolina (SOM TEC) curriculum in August 2014, we’ve been building toward this year’s engagement. Diagnostic Radiology is one of 14 disciplines to ‘coil’ through the new curriculum from Foundation phase (19 blocks) to Application phase (14 blocks) then reaching peak subscription in Individualization phase (14 blocks). 2017-2018 is the first year of full implementation of the TEC Individualization phase. Our impressive stats are thus: 9 MS4s in Match 2018 Radiology-bound as the highest number ever, 100 students rotating through 35 radiology selectives, and 180 MS4s participating in Capstone month ‘Radiology for Interns’ interactive lectures. Radiology Interest Groups for Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology have been great draws, and imaging-centric posters during the 50th Annual Medical Student Research Day were award-winning.

Hats off to several exceptional UME contributors! Dr. Jorge Oldan is very dedicated to our RADY401 elective and has assured our presence at SOM Coil meetings, and our 35 selectives are helmed by course directors Drs. Leon Bacchus, Lynn Fordham, Bob Dixon, Katrina McGinty, Cherie Kuzmiak, Daniel Nissman, Benjamin Huang and Keith Smith. Executive Vice Chair Assistant Casey Hribar keeps our radiology selectives moving forward with her organizational skills and enthusiasm. Drs. Yueh Lee and Ari Isaacson are mentoring in radiology research, and the list goes on. It’s a great time to be a Tarheel!
