His original plan in undergrad was to pursue medical research. But then? \u201cI really enjoyed studying animals,\u201d he says. That led to researching the BP oil spill\u2019s impact on blue crab larvae, followed by a job as an educator at the\u00a0<strong>Audubon Zoo in New Orleans<\/strong>\u2014which he calls \u201cthe most fun I\u2019ve ever had at a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">After several years in the zoo world, the reality of the career\u2019s financial strain set in. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be 60, working three jobs,\u201d Fen explains. So, he pivoted again\u2014this time earning his master\u2019s at\u00a0<strong>Marshall University<\/strong>, where he did field and lab work on everything from\u00a0<strong>tree frogs and carnivorous plants to freshwater mussels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eventually, friends in North Carolina (and some gentle nudging) persuaded him to relocate to the Triangle. \u201cOne of my friends worked at UNC and spoke highly of its research environment,\u201d Fen says. So, he took the leap\u2014and ended up in\u00a0<strong>Dr. Muir\u2019s lab<\/strong>, helping it grow from the ground up.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Fen is great to work with and has been a great help,&#8221; says Eric Muir, PhD, Associate Professor in Radiology. &#8220;Fen is smart and highly capable to assist with all aspects of conducting and managing research. Even when working on topics he doesn\u2019t have previous experience with, Fen is puts in the effort to quickly get up to speed. Fen has been a great addition.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>What Exactly\u00a0<em>Is<\/em>\u00a0Heavy Water, Anyway?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working in a new lab means Fen wears a lot of hats. He\u2019s tackled everything from analyzing data to wrestling with the bureaucratic hydra of vendor paperwork and pharmaceutical ordering. Dr. Muir\u2019s research focuses on\u00a0<strong>ocular blood flow<\/strong>, and Fen\u2019s been at the center of projects involving\u00a0<strong>deuterium oxide (aka heavy water)<\/strong>\u2014a less invasive, more MRI-friendly way to track how fluids move through the eye.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe&#8217;s also looking into medications for glaucoma and Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d he notes. \u201cI never thought of Alzheimer\u2019s affecting the eyes, but apparently that\u2019s something that happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Carnivorous Plants, Tattoos, and Tomb Raider Dreams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outside the lab, Fen\u2019s life is a love letter to curiosity. He describes himself with one word:\u00a0<strong>\u201coverthinking.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(Though we\u2019d argue \u201cfascinating\u201d fits, too.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s especially passionate about\u00a0<strong>carnivorous plants<\/strong>\u2014so much so he\u2019s got a tattoo of a\u00a0<em>Sundew<\/em>\u00a0on his arm. His favorite? The\u00a0<em>Venus flytrap<\/em>, a plant that\u00a0<strong>only grows in the wild within a 60-mile radius of coastal North Carolina<\/strong>. \u201cEveryone thinks they\u2019re jungle plants,\u201d he laughs. \u201cThey\u2019re not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also enjoys\u00a0<strong>running, kayaking<\/strong>, and a hobby called\u00a0<strong>herping<\/strong>\u2014searching for reptiles and amphibians in the wild. A childhood dream of being a\u00a0<strong>marine biologist<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Lara Croft: Tomb Raider<\/strong>\u00a0makes perfect sense when you hear him talk about his outdoor adventures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>If He Could\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7858 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/mussels-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/mussels-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/mussels.png 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>If Fen could have a superpower? \u201cI\u2019d resurrect ecosystems,\u201d he says. (No surprise there.) And if he could pick the brain of anyone in history, he\u2019d sit down with\u00a0<strong>Rachel Carson<\/strong>, whose book\u00a0<em>Silent Spring<\/em>\u00a0helped launch the American conservation movement. Her book inspired generations by highlighting that harmful chemicals are destroying the environment. Eliminating insects would also mean losing the birds that depend on them. Spring would arrive\u2014but without the familiar chorus of chirping crickets, buzzing bees, and singing birds. The season would fall eerily silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it would be incredibly meaningful to sit down with her\u2014not just to share how much she\u2019s influenced the world since her time, but also to talk about the challenges she faced as one of the first widely recognized female conservationists in the U.S. It would be heartwarming to show her the lasting impact of her work and how far the conservation movement has come, in part because of her courage and persistence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Gumbo, Goth Cowboys, and Good Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fen\u2019s favorite artist right now is\u00a0<strong>Orville Peck<\/strong>, especially the melancholic vibes of \u201cHexie Mountains.\u201d His ideal last meal?\u00a0<strong>Chicken and sausage gumbo<\/strong>\u2014a nod to his years in Louisiana, even if he\u2019s originally from California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7865 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/radiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1384\/2025\/06\/zoo-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>When it comes to keeping in touch, Fen\u2019s a fan of context: \u201cText is great for a quick question, but when your friends are scattered across the country, nothing beats a phone or video call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Final Words of Wisdom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">His best advice to his younger self? \u201cNot everything is set in stone;
