\"\"If you’ve ever had the pleasure of working with\u00a0Anna Byars<\/strong>, you already know the truth behind her self-description in one word:\u00a0chill<\/em>. But don\u2019t let her laid-back, easygoing vibe fool you\u2014As an Administrative Support Associate, <\/strong>Anna is the engine behind the scenes for the Neuroradiology and CT Divisions<\/strong> at UNC Radiology, making sure lectures run smoothly, reimbursements get filed, and schedules stay on track. She\u2019s our go-to administrative guru\u2014organized, dependable, and quietly funny in a way that sneaks up on you.<\/p>\n

Anna joined UNC Radiology just over two years ago, and like many great journeys, hers didn\u2019t follow a straight path. After earning a physical therapist assistant degree from a community college in Huntsville, Alabama, she moved to North Carolina to be with her longtime partner, now fianc\u00e9, Peyton, who was in graduate school at the time. \u201cWe\u2019re high school sweethearts,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cWe’ve been together for over a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her career trajectory included everything from working in retail to a vet clinic before finding her way into administrative work\u2014a field she hadn\u2019t previously explored. \u201cThis was my first office job,\u201d she admits. \u201cBut I\u2019ve really enjoyed the experience. It\u2019s given me patience, helped me become more flexible, and definitely sharpened my detail-oriented side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her current role spans a wide range of duties, from managing travel logistics and organizing major lectures like the Spring Neuro Fellow Lecture and the Wood Lecture, to assisting with promotion committee letters. She’s a problem-solver, a plate-spinner, and the kind of person you want in your corner when plans start to unravel. \u201cI like feeling like I can make things happen,\u201d she says. \u201cEven when things go off track, I\u2019m learning to pivot, stay calm, and find a solution. This job has taught me flexibility. Sometimes things don\u2019t go according to plan, and you have to be able to think on your feet. It\u2019s also taught me a lot of patience\u2014because tracking things down and adjusting last minute is just part of the role.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAnna is a very organized person that always helps,\u201d says a faculty members that she has supported for a little over a\u00a0year.\u201cShe is very easy to work. She takes the extra time to find an answer for any questions. She is definitely an asset to the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Anna doesn\u2019t hesitate: \u201cThe people. We have such a good group\u2014it makes such a difference. The friendships, the support, the shared understanding of the chaos on some days\u2014it\u2019s what makes coming to work enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside the Office: A Bookworm, Baker, and Swiftie<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"When she\u2019s not keeping UNC Radiology\u2019s gears turning, Anna\u2019s living her best life\u2014curled up with a fantasy novel, shopping for deals at Abercrombie, baking up chocolate-peanut butter confections, or cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes with Peyton. \u201cI\u2019m also on my 22nd<\/sup> \u00a0book this year,\u201d she shares proudly. \u201cMy goal was 20, but now I\u2019ve changed it to reading my height in books, no easy feat at 5\u20198\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her reading list includes fantasy favorites like\u00a0Throne of Glass<\/em>\u00a0by Sarah J. Maas,\u00a0The Dream Harbor<\/em>\u00a0series by Laurie Gilmore, and the massively popular\u00a0Fourth Wing<\/em>\u00a0by Rebecca Yarros. \u201cReading has become one of my favorite parts of every day,\u201d she says. \u201cSarah J. Maas got me back into it, and now I\u2019m hooked.\u201d She only reads physical books, not e-readers. \u201cWe look at screens all day long\u2014I need a break. Plus, I love bookmarks and seeing my progress. Kindle just doesn\u2019t do that for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

A self-described introvert who thrives on quiet routines and meaningful relationships, Anna is quick to point out that first impressions might not tell the whole story. \u201cI tend to keep to myself at first,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I really value building connections. I like having people I can rely on, and who can rely on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still waters run deep. She\u2019s loyal, funny, and values meaningful relationships over small talk. When asked how her fianc\u00e9 Peyton would describe her, she smiles: \u201cLoyal. Charming. Witty.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Slice of Life\u2014and Pizza<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"If she could choose any superpower, Anna says she\u2019d want to fly or teleport. \u201cWe travel so much\u2014both of our families are still in Alabama\u2014and I hate the actual travel part,\u201d she laughs. \u201cIf I could skip the drive, I would in a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her travel highlights include recent trips to Chicago, San Diego (where Peyton proposed!), and Austin\u2014with Yellowstone and an Italian elopement on the horizon. \u201cWe\u2019re planning our wedding and honeymoon in Italy,\u201d she beams. \u201cWe\u2019ll be eloping!\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to comfort food, her answer is instant:\u00a0Meatlovers Pizza from Mellow Mushroom<\/em>. Although sadly, those pizza days are behind her. Anna hasn\u2019t eaten gluten in over eight years. As for music, her current anthem is anything off Taylor Swift\u2019s\u00a0Speak Now (Taylor\u2019s Version)<\/em>\u2014a nostalgic callback to her \u201cangsty\u201d teenage years.<\/p>\n

And while her path to UNC Radiology wasn\u2019t linear, Anna is happy with where she\u2019s landed. \u201cI\u2019ve realized that life doesn\u2019t have to follow a strict plan. As long as I\u2019m fulfilled, have work-life balance, and get to do things I enjoy with people I care about, that\u2019s what really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAnna is great to work with,\u201d says Ashley Paul, fellow administrative partner. \u201cWe\u2019re very alike in how we think and work so it makes work go smoothly. Plus – We both have dogs and love swapping stories of our fur babies \u2013 which always makes everything more fun!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A Final Word: Chill, with a Side of Wit<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Her favorite thing about herself? Her humor\u2014subtle, dry, and often surprising. Her autobiography title?\u00a0A Year in My Life<\/em>. Who would play her in the movie? \u201cJennifer Lawrence,\u201d she says with zero hesitation.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re lucky enough to work with Anna, you know just how fitting that casting would be: grounded, relatable, funny, and quietly fierce when it matters most.<\/p>\n

Anna\u2019s supervisor, Amy Edge, gushed about her, \u201cAnna is an administrative assistant whose quiet composure, sharp problem-solving, and seamless multitasking keep everything\u2014from the esteemed Wood Lecture to complex international travel arrangements, and everyone in the Neuroradiology and Cardiothoracic Divisions\u2014on course.\u00a0She is a wonderful team member and a joy to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
