60th anniversary of the opening of NC Memorial Hospital

Sixty years ago – during September, 1952 – North Carolina Memorial Hospital first opened its doors to new patients. The opening of the hospital also heralded the expansion of the UNC School of Medicine from a two year program to today’s four year one.

Needless to say, a lot has happened since that time. UNC Healthcare has expanded greatly both on campus and across the state of North Carolina, and is now considered a national leader in patient care, medical education and biomedical research. Quite an accomplishment.

The Department of Radiation Oncology is honored to be a part of the UNC Healthcare enterprise, and wishes it a very happy 60th birthday. And many happy returns!
