This award is given to those who have devoted a significant part of their academic careers to mentoring, helping students achieve their full potentials both during their training at UNC and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>The award, established in 1997, had as its first recipient famed UNC men&#8217;s basketball coach Dean Smith, which is why Dr. Cox had the opportunity to attend and be recognized by a sell-out crowd of UNC basketball fans at the March 3, 2020 game between the Tar Heels and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
