Please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/rrcf\/general-information\/ilab-scheduling\/\">register for an iLab account<\/a> and submit the training request there.\u00a0 If you need more information, send email to <a href=\"mailto:rcf@med.unc.edu\">rcf@med.unc.edu\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">For Cs-137 Irradiators, training will be provided by the Radiation Safety Office\/EHS. Once you submit a training request in iLab, the RSO official will contact you for the related paperwork and training. Your PI or Department Chair will need to approve the Access Form.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>For X-ray Irradiators, you must complete the \u2018Analytical and Cabinet X-ray\u2019 self-study unit through <a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.unc.edu\/training\/self-study\/?area=radiation-safety\">EHS<\/a> before being trained. Once that is complete, please submit a training request for the desired irradiator through iLab.<\/li>\n<li>For the Image-guided X-ray Irradiator, training will be provided by the Core on the <strong>First Monday of each month at 9:30 <\/strong><strong>at no charge to users<\/strong>.\u00a0 Individual training is also available with an associated charge for the machine time usage. Core staff will contact you once you submit a training request to confirm you for the session. After training is complete, your first radiation experiment will be demonstrated to our core staff, and users who pass the demonstration will be granted access to online booking on the equipment calendar in iLab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Radiation Safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cs-137 based irradiators contain radioactive material, cesium-137 (half life of 30.1 years) to provide gamma radiation (Energy at ~ 663 KeV) for research needs.\u00a0 The Cs-137 radioactive sources are in the form of cesium chloride and are doubly encapsulated in stainless steel. The design of the irradiator is required to provide shielding (primarily lead) so that the external radiation levels are sufficiently low. For irradiators with moving sources, the radiation level increases up to 2 mrem\/hour when the radiation source is in transit from the &#8220;off&#8221; to the &#8220;irradiate&#8221; position. Exposure to radiation from the irradiator is extremely low. Therefore, personnel dosimeters are not required for routine operation. All irradiator users must follow the Standard Operation Procedure provided during the training.<\/p>\n<p>For all X-ray irradiator users, you must complete the \u2018Analytical and Cabinet X-ray\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.unc.edu\/training\/self-study\/?area=radiation-safety\">self-study unit through EHS<\/a> before any radiation usage.<\/p>\n<p>Each use of the irradiator must be recorded in a log book. Each record must include the name of the individual using the irradiator and the date.
