Volunteer counselors are trained to perform on-site rapid testing for HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis as well as lab testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Counselors can provide patients with safer sex supplies, tools, and education. Getting tested is the best way to find out if you have HIV. If your test does come back positive, that\u00a0<em>DOES NOT<\/em>\u00a0mean you have AIDS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>There are many treatments available to help people with HIV lead productive, healthy lives although there is still no cure for HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>HIV can be transmitted from an infected individual to an uninfected person through blood, vaginal fluid, breastmilk, anal mucus, semen, and pre-semen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Not sharing needles and using a condom\u00a0<i>every time<\/i>\u00a0you have sex are the best ways to protect yourself from contracting HIV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A highly effective\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/risk\/prep\/index.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HIV prevention medication<\/a>\u00a0is available for qualifying at-risk people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Things you should know about sexually transmitted infections (STIs):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>STIs may be symptomless or may have visual or physical symptoms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Male and female condoms and dental dams are the best way to prevent spreading an STI to a partner, but they are not perfect!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting tested regularly is the best way for sexually active people to be and stay safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Gonorrhea and chlamydia can all be cured with antibiotics, but this also means a person can be re-infected after treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hepatitis C can be transmitted by sharing needles or sexual contact, and is treatable with medication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Did you know?<\/b>\u00a0Anyone born between 1945 and 1965 may be at risk for Hepatitis C because of exposure through medical equipment prior to the 1970\u2019s. One of our counselors will then spend 10-15 minutes getting to know you and your needs, as well as discussing your recommended tests and answering any questions you may have. For urine or swab tests, we will guide you on how to self-collect the specimens, which you will do privately in a restroom and leave the sample(s) in a designated spot. For other tests, we will collect a few drops of blood from one of your fingers. We can provide HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis results in person in clinic shortly after the tests complete, or over the phone when we call with the gonorrhea and chlamydia lab results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m an undergraduate student interested in volunteering, what can I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, we are unable to accept undergraduate students who are not part of a professional degree program like nursing to volunteer with our clinic.
