Getting a SHIRE Workspace

Already submitted a data request for this project? Skip this step and go to step 2.

In order to get data on the SHIRE, you first have to request data! Access the data request form here (link opens in new tab).

Submit a request to have a SHIRE Workspace built for your project. Your workspace will be created when your data request is assigned to an analyst. This only needs to be submitted once per IRB—not once per user. This is a step you’ll complete every time you have a new project in the SHIRE.

Getting Access to a SHIRE Workspace

Each user will need to gain access to the project’s SHIRE Workspace.

Already have access to UNC Health Citrix, Epic, or an existing SHIRE project? Skip this step and go to step 2.

You don’t log in to the SHIRE with your onyen—rather, you’ll use UNC Health login credentials (also known as a “u-number”). Below are instructions on requesting a new u-number for yourself or your study team members:

  • Determine who your department’s Authorized Signer is: see “Find Your Authorized” signer on this page
  • Contact your authorized signer and provide the following information. Note that not all authorized signers will be aware of SHIRE so you may need to explain your access needs to them.
    • Required Personal Info: name, last 4 SSN, birth month/year, PID, phone number, email address
    • Reason: SHIRE access, IRB xx-xxxx, expires x/x/xx (list your IRB expiration date)
    • Proof of recent (<1 year) HIPAA training
  • The department authorized signer or their designee should then submit a Non-HR Identity Management Request (UNCH login required). They will already know how to do this.
  • Once the account is created, the authorized signer will receive an email with the subject line “UNC Health Care Domain Account Created.” They should forward these instructions to you.
  • Once you receive the instructions, follow the steps to create a password and continue setting up your account.
Already have access to an existing SHIRE project? Skip this step and go to step 3.

Once you and your study members have your UNCH login, you can request SHIRE access via the UNC Health access request portal (UNCH login required).

  • Under User Details, select the user(s) for whom you want to request access. You can add multiple users at once. (Tip: Search for someone by entering the last name, and if needed, the first name. e.g., Doe, John).
  • Under Select Access, search for and select “Azure TRE Researcher.”
  • Click Review & Submit. In the Comment box, please include the IRB # for your project. Click Submit Request.
