{"id":2290,"date":"2025-09-03T22:20:49","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T02:20:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/shire\/?page_id=2290"},"modified":"2025-12-15T13:16:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T18:16:13","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/shire\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About the SHIRE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">If you have ever worked with EHR data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/tracs.unc.edu\/index.php\/services\/informatics-and-data-science\/cdw-h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carolina Data Warehouse for Health (CDWH)<\/a> in the past, the SHIRE is our eventual <strong>replacement for the network drive<\/strong> where you\u2019re used to finding your datasets.<\/p>\n<p>For users, the SHIRE looks and feels just like working on a Windows or Linux personal computer. You will get to that computer using your web browser. Once you log in, your research data will be there waiting for you. A large variety of <strong>analytical tools are pre-installed<\/strong> or easy for users to install themselves (e.g., RStudio, SAS, Jupyter, VSCode, Databricks, etc.), so that you can do all your work inside the SHIRE. The SHIRE can also support <strong>multiple users on one project<\/strong>, all working on the same shared data.<\/p>\n<p>The SHIRE is unique in that it supports <strong>scalable computing<\/strong>. For small, straightforward projects, researchers can use a small amount of compute, akin to the power of a laptop. For big data projects or projects using AI or machine learning, the SHIRE can offer access to compute clusters and even GPUs.
