The UNC Department of Social Medicine was founded on and remains grounded in a commitment to foster social justice. We are dedicated to recognizing and engaging diverse perspectives in our research, teaching, and service missions, and to pursuing equitable solutions to systemic and structural injustice, especially in health, health care and biomedical research.

The same dedication to social justice drives our commitment to ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion in our hiring and administrative practices, advancement policies, and training programs. We are also dedicated to ensuring that the Department is a welcoming community for all students, staff, and faculty.

These ongoing commitment entails both critical reflection on our assumptions and practices, and continued self-awareness, self-education and engagement.
